The annual PILnet Global Forum aims to connect lawyers, law schools, bar associations, policy makers, NGO representatives and pro bono/public interest legal stakeholders to provide a regional perspective on pro bono practices. This year’s PILnet Global Forum (11-13 November 2019) was held in Asia for the first time with over 300 attendees from more than 40 countries, convening in Singapore to reflect on the overall theme: Engaging lawyers everywhere to serve the public interest, Empowering innovation through new tools, and Enabling change through strategic partnerships.

Plight of Abused Foreign Domestic Workers Who Seek Justice and Shelter in Singapore

June commented on the enhanced sentencing guidelines imposed on abusers of FDWs and the FDWs’ civil claims for compensation for physical abuse.

“The various financial, language and immigration hurdles that these FDWs face in resolving their abuse cases could cause them to lose faith in the Singapore legal system, and “accept less than satisfactory settlements of their civil claims or just drop their claims altogether”, said June Lim, managing director of Eden Law Corporation.

“The FDWs always want to go home, the process can take up to three to four years to complete, they are traumatised by the abuse, and their families need the money. Poverty is the reason why they came to Singapore to work in the first place,” said Lim, also an ambassador for Law Society Pro Bono Services.”

Project LEAF

Project LEAF (Legal Empowerment & Assistance for Foreign spouses) is a collaboration between Eden Law and Law Society Pro Bono Services, to cater to the legal needs of foreign spouses with Singaporean citizen children who find themselves in matrimonial disputes on a pro bono basis.

Young Lawyers in Singapore Giving Free Legal Services

Our Associate Director Low Seow Ling shared her experience working on pro bono cases and her motivation as a lawyer.

To Low, who works at Eden Law Corporation, pro bono work adds meaning to her job. 

“The reality is that help is aplenty for people who can pay…so I want to be available to give the needy a choice,” she said. “Even though (pro bono) takes up a lot of time from paid work…that is what makes me think that this practice of law is meaningful.”
