Happy International Women’s Day !

March 8th, 2021 Posted by Community Events, Insights No Comment yet

Today is International Women’s Day, a day where we celebrate the success of women in social, cultural, economical and political development.

Eden Law would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the successes of our clients, many of whom are women who are juggling children, work and their own struggles moving forward with their lives after challenging circumstances.

We would especially want to highlight our clients who are foreign wives. They face immigration, employment and accommodation challenges in Singapore but still press on for the sake of the children.

Women are all heroes in their own ways. May we continue to find strength within to excel in our lives. Happy International Women’s Day!

2020 Review

December 31st, 2020 Posted by Insights No Comment yet

At the close of 2020, in a year that has been challenging for many, we take the opportunity to reflect on our Community Engagement efforts.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we continued to provide quality legal representation to clients from underprivileged communities. We had to be creative in our approach because of the COVID-19 pandemic, holding most of our meetings with clients and arranging for e-commissioning and translation of affidavits via video conferencing platforms. This was especially crucial during the Circuit Breaker period with spouses trapped at home with their abusers, family violence occurring behind closed doors and when victims had limited access to help or access to their children.

Although it was difficult for people to gather, our lawyers still managed to conduct more than 20 legal awareness talks via Zoom with our social service agency partners. Our Managing Director, June Lim, also spoke on CNA 938 Live several times to share her insights on legal issues such as the increasing number of COVID-related divorces, a Public Defender’s Office in Singapore and the long-term impact on children from divorced families.

We were also proud to announce that our very first Trainee, Loh Ya Xin, was called to the Bar via Zoom. Together with our two other Trainees Siew Jowen and Liang Liwen, we hope to train more lawyers to be passionate and yet practical in their service to the community.

Wishing everyone a less challenging 2021!

~ June Lim, Managing Director

CNA 938 feature – negative impact of divorce on children

December 18th, 2020 Posted by In The News, Insights No Comment yet

Our Ms June Lim shared her views on the MSF’s landmark study on the Intergenerational Effects of Divorce on Children. In particular, June emphasised the need for parties to be aware of the negative impact of divorce on their children. She also urged divorcing parties to put aside their differences and work together with mediators, counsellors and lawyers to achieve an amicable outcome in their divorce, in order to counteract such negative impact.

CNA 938 feature – view on having a Public Defender’s Office in Singapore

December 10th, 2020 Posted by In The News, Insights No Comment yet

Our Managing Director, June Lim shared her views on having a Public Defender’s Office in Singapore, a possible addition to the criminal justice system of Singapore due to the recent Parti Liyani case.
“Having a Public Defender’s Office will promote confidence in our legal system. The public will be able to see that, whether you are rich or poor, and regardless of nationality, everyone in our society will have the same ability to access the legal system, have a lawyer take up your case if you have merits in your defence, and then defend yourself with legal help in the criminal proceedings.”
Promoting access to justice is a core mission of Eden Law. We believe NO ONE should be deprived of quality legal representation. The team at Eden Law is committed to provide quality and affordable legal services to all, whether rich or poor, and regardless of nationality.

CNA 938 feature – increase in divorces filed during the pandemic

December 10th, 2020 Posted by In The News, Insights No Comment yet

Our Managing Director, June Lim, shared on Singapore Today 938 Live why there is an increase in divorces filed due to the pandemic.
More importantly, June also shared about how parties can and should work towards an amicable divorce and minimise the impact of the children, with the support of the counselling schemes available.
June and the team at Eden Law believe in assisting parties to come to an amicable divorce and work towards effective co-parenting. The ultimate goal is for parties to continue to be good parents to the children after the divorce.
What I tell my clients is that they should envisage their children’s graduation or wedding day. Your child would want both parents to attend their important day and for the whole family to be happy even if mother and father are no longer married to each other. And then you work backwards and you determine the kind of relationship you should have with your ex-spouse in the midst of the divorce proceedings and beyond.

Eden Law turns 6 !

August 7th, 2020 Posted by Insights No Comment yet

Back in 2014, we realized that there was a gap in the legal assistance and resources available to individuals with modest means and unprivileged communities in Singapore. Believing that no one should be deprived of their day in Court, Eden Law was founded with the mission to provide AFFORDABLE JUSTICE FOR ALL.

For the past 6 years, Eden Law has worked with community partners to provide pro bono and low bono legal services for the “sandwich class” clients, who could not qualify for legal aid but also could not afford legal services at market rate.

As part of our social mission, Eden Law has also conducted more than 150 free legal awareness talks at over 70 community organisations throughout Singapore to equip the public and the social service sector with legal knowledge.

The COVID pandemic has been a challenging time for all of us, but we continue to provide our legal services to clients to the best of our abilities. Our lawyers have conducted legal consultations via phone and online video calls, and also participated in webinars with the community organisations.

We sincerely thank all our community partners and clients for their support for the past 6 years. The team at Eden Law looks forward to making more of a social impact in the coming years!

Simplified Uncontested Divorce, Not As Simple As It Seems?

May 11th, 2020 Posted by In The News, Insights No Comment yet

In 2015, the Family Justice Courts introduced the Simplified Uncontested Divorce with the aim of simplifying the process of divorce for parties who manage to come to an agreement on all the terms of their divorce and ancillary matters.

Saving time and costs for the parties, the number of Simplified Uncontested Divorces have steadily increased over the years – from 24% of all divorces filed in 2015 to approximately half of all divorces in 2018. In fact, less than 5% of all divorces filed in 2017 required a final adjudication hearing in Court (i.e. divorce trial or Ancillary Matters hearing). (more…)
