Eden Law turns 6 !

August 7th, 2020 Posted by Insights No Comment yet

Back in 2014, we realized that there was a gap in the legal assistance and resources available to individuals with modest means and unprivileged communities in Singapore. Believing that no one should be deprived of their day in Court, Eden Law was founded with the mission to provide AFFORDABLE JUSTICE FOR ALL.

For the past 6 years, Eden Law has worked with community partners to provide pro bono and low bono legal services for the “sandwich class” clients, who could not qualify for legal aid but also could not afford legal services at market rate.

As part of our social mission, Eden Law has also conducted more than 150 free legal awareness talks at over 70 community organisations throughout Singapore to equip the public and the social service sector with legal knowledge.

The COVID pandemic has been a challenging time for all of us, but we continue to provide our legal services to clients to the best of our abilities. Our lawyers have conducted legal consultations via phone and online video calls, and also participated in webinars with the community organisations.

We sincerely thank all our community partners and clients for their support for the past 6 years. The team at Eden Law looks forward to making more of a social impact in the coming years!

Trainer for Lawyers in Action!

July 14th, 2020 Posted by Community Events No Comment yet

Just two days after she joined us as Counsel, Lei Theng has stayed true to her word, and continued in the finest traditions of all educators.  On 2 July 2020, Lei Theng gave a Zoom Workshop for more than 380 members of the Bar and in-house counsel on Basic Principles of Legal Drafting.  District Judge Mr Joseph Yeo joined in after Lei Theng’s talk for a lively and engaging Q&A session.

One of the most respected and experienced educators in the legal industry, Lei Theng has always been generous in sharing her experience and knowledge with younger lawyers, not only at NUS Law, but also young lawyers seeking to practice, and already in practice.  Drawing on her years of experience as a practicing lawyer, clinical professor, and legal skills educator, Lei Theng critiqued actual examples drawn from practice, and provided an overview of principles to be followed in good legal writing.

In response to requests for suggestions on how to improve legal writing, Lei Theng has urged the Law Society to consider reviving the written advocacy tutorials that were run two years ago.  In the coming weeks, Lei Theng will be running further workshops on legal skills for various groups, and on law for social workers and members of the public.

Lei Theng’s passion for education extends beyond the law school, and she is thrilled to join Eden Law’s social mission of promoting legal awareness in the community. Eden Law believes in the importance of empowering the public with legal knowledge. Since 2014, Eden Law has conducted more than 150 free legal awareness talks for the public on legal issues such as estate planning, divorce and neighbour disputes.  Lawyers from Eden Law will be participating in the Law Awareness Weeks organised by the Law Society Pro Bono Services and the CDCs.

In line with social distancing measures, Eden Law has been hosting legal awareness webinars with our social partners. We welcome any social and community organisations to reach out to us for potential collaboration.

We welcome Ms Lim Lei Theng as Counsel !

Lei Theng comes fresh from her position as Co-Director of the NUS Centre for Pro Bono & Clinical Legal Education at the NUS Faculty of Law. Lei Theng began teaching at NUS Law in 1992. She started the Negotiation and Mediation Workshops at NUS Law, and pioneered hands-on legal practice modules.  Even when she left NUS Law for practice at Drew & Napier in 1999, she continued to teach as an adjunct.  Lei Theng returned to NUS Law in 2003 as Deputy Director of the Legal Skills Programme where she developed and ran modules on advocacy, negotiations, and corporate deal-making. In 2009, Lei Theng started the Clinical Legal Education programme at NUS Law by taking on students to assist her work at the Legal Aid Bureau. In 2010, she was promoted to Associate Professor. In 2012, Lei Theng started the NUS Pro Bono Office, running the mandatory programme for law students, and developing pro bono programmes to meet community needs while giving students the opportunity to learn while being of service.  In 2017, Lei Theng was appointed Co-Director of the NUS Centre for Pro Bono & Clinical Legal Education together with Associate Professor Ruby Lee.

Lei Theng was appointed to the Singapore Mediation Centre’s Panel of Mediators in 1997, and is an active mediator. She is appointed to the Singapore Mediation Centre, the Singapore International Mediation Centre, the Tribunal for Maintenance of Parents, and also mediates privately in healthcare, family, and other disputes.

Lei Theng is also a trainer of lawyers, teaching advocacy for the Law Society since 1996, running courses on legal skills and legal writing, and running training in negotiation, mediation and dispute resolution.

Lei Theng is in Eden to be of service to the community.  She will take on family, criminal, and civil litigation matters, and assist charitable institutions with corporate governance and transactional matters. She aims to provide quality legal services, working pro bono for those whose finances are tight, and charging on the basis of ability to pay for those who can afford it.

We welcome Lei Theng to Eden!

Simplified Uncontested Divorce, Not As Simple As It Seems?

May 11th, 2020 Posted by In The News, Insights No Comment yet

In 2015, the Family Justice Courts introduced the Simplified Uncontested Divorce with the aim of simplifying the process of divorce for parties who manage to come to an agreement on all the terms of their divorce and ancillary matters.

Saving time and costs for the parties, the number of Simplified Uncontested Divorces have steadily increased over the years – from 24% of all divorces filed in 2015 to approximately half of all divorces in 2018. In fact, less than 5% of all divorces filed in 2017 required a final adjudication hearing in Court (i.e. divorce trial or Ancillary Matters hearing). (more…)

May 5th, 2020 Posted by In The News, Insights No Comment yet

The COVID-19 period presents a unique opportunity for parents to overcome their differences, prioritize the children’s best interests and work towards positive outcomes.  While the Circuit Breaker has been extended to 1 June 2020, social distancing measures may still be a part of daily life for the foreseeable future. How then should separated and divorced parents adapt their co-parenting strategies and child access arrangements in this new normal?

May we suggest 4 Cs to guide you during these unprecedented times. (more…)

International Women’s Day is on March 8 every year. It aims to honour the contribution of women to society and to bring awareness to more equitable choices to women while eliminating discrimination and societal hurdles to women.

In the same spirit, Eden Law aspires to be the premier low bono legal firm in Singapore, providing competent, affordable and effective legal aid to the underserved and disadvantaged. Our social mission is achieved through:

  1. A sliding-scale fee model based on client’s disposable income
  2. Fixed Fee arrangements
  3. Competent, effective and efficient representation

Women in disadvantaged circumstances are a core focus of our outreach and legal aid efforts. To this end, we have initiated Project LEAF with the Law Society Pro Bono Services to provide legal aid to foreign spouses in matrimonial disputes.
