At the close of 2020, in a year that has been challenging for many, we take the opportunity to reflect on our Community Engagement efforts.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we continued to provide quality legal representation to clients from underprivileged communities. We had to be creative in our approach because of the COVID-19 pandemic, holding most of our meetings with clients and arranging for e-commissioning and translation of affidavits via video conferencing platforms. This was especially crucial during the Circuit Breaker period with spouses trapped at home with their abusers, family violence occurring behind closed doors and when victims had limited access to help or access to their children.
Although it was difficult for people to gather, our lawyers still managed to conduct more than 20 legal awareness talks via Zoom with our social service agency partners. Our Managing Director, June Lim, also spoke on CNA 938 Live several times to share her insights on legal issues such as the increasing number of COVID-related divorces, a Public Defender’s Office in Singapore and the long-term impact on children from divorced families.
We were also proud to announce that our very first Trainee, Loh Ya Xin, was called to the Bar via Zoom. Together with our two other Trainees Siew Jowen and Liang Liwen, we hope to train more lawyers to be passionate and yet practical in their service to the community.
Wishing everyone a less challenging 2021!
